Thomas Jefferson Said It

The following quote is one of my favorites that I wish more people would take to heart:

It is in our lives and not our words that our religion must be read.
Thomas Jefferson

Frustrated--Knowing that you are quite the history guru, I was not suprised that you would point to this flaw in his character. It is still a great motto to live by as far as I am concerned... it points to an ideal that holds true no matter what the point in history one exists. Jefferson? His words work for all time, but he was a MAN of HIS time and reference point, not ours. From our vantage point he was certainly flawed, but who isn't? Does it make the ideal less true? Take the concept of forgiveness, most people would agree that this is a significant ideal, but how many of us actually truly live it in our lives? Tag, you're it! ;o)

Yeah, I see you there! Of course, though he's very quotable, Jefferson's religion is somewhat suspect. He made more effort than most presidents and founders to separate religion from politics and himself from religion. Some people at the time definitely questioned what his beliefs were.

Frustrated-- I have sent you an email with my response regarding Epicticus. It is a bit long for the comment section...
